The fair way to buy a hot item is to be ready before it drops. Each store works a little differently.

What the words mean
- MSRP, or "the price on the box"
- The price the maker sets. A fair price is at or close to it. Anything far above it is a reseller.
- Pre-order
- Paying ahead to get the product on release day. The best way to get a popular item at the box price.
- Queue or waiting room
- A virtual line a store uses on busy drops. Stay on the page and do not refresh, or you lose your place.
- Drawing or lottery
- Some stores pick buyers at random for hot items. Enter while signed in; winners are charged and shipped.
- Reseller or scalper
- Someone who buys to resell at a big markup. On Walmart and Amazon, look for "sold and shipped by" the store itself.
