Start here: what to buy first

Pokémon sorts its products by "Play Level". Level 1 is where it tells new players to start, and Level 2 is the next step (Pokémon TCG product guide). A ready-to-play deck teaches you more than a box of packs.

  • Pokémon TCG Battle Academy box
    Play Level 1Battle Academy$24.99

Three 60-card decks, a game board and step-by-step guides, made for learning with a friend. The current English edition is from 2024 and big stores often show it sold out, so buy it only at or near $24.99 (PHD Games).

  • Pokémon TCG Mega Battle Deck, Mega Gengar ex
Play Level 2Mega Battle Deck$14.99 each

A ready-to-play 60-card deck, Mega Gengar ex or Mega Diancie ex, with damage counters, a coin, a playmat and a code for Pokémon TCG Live. Buy one of each and two people can play (PokeGuardian).

Want to try opening packs? A 3-pack blister is $13.99, and a Booster Bundle is 6 packs for $26.94 (PHD Games). An Elite Trainer Box ($49.99) is a good gift, but it isn't the cheapest way in. On October 30, two all-foil 30th Celebration Battle Decks arrive at $19.99 each (pokemon.com, PHD Games); collectors want them too, so expect a rush.

"This play level is for newer players who are just learning how to play or are still in the early stages of their Pokémon TCG journey."

Learn free before you spend

  • Pokémon TCG Live is free on phones and computers, and Pokémon calls it the way to learn (tcg.pokemon.com). Most products above include a code that unlocks the same deck in the app.
  • The rules: a short "Getting Started" video and a Quick Start rulebook are on the same page.
  • Play! Pokémon League runs casual weekly play at local game stores, and players earn promo cards and other rewards for taking part (Play! Pokémon). Ask the store about cost and whether it has decks to lend.

Where you can buy at the box price right now

We count two things as a real chance to pay the price on the box (MSRP):

A fair price at a vetted shop

A shop we've vetted sells it at MSRP, or a little over it: up to 5% or $10 over, whichever is more, and never more than a quarter over. That's the rule on our Deals page, the same for every product.

An open line at the official seller

A queue, drawing, invitation or pre-order that's open now at a store that sells it officially.

Right now

See what's at a fair price on Deals and what's open on Windows. Both update through the day.

If nothing qualifies today, that's common for a set in high demand. Pre-ordering at a local game store, at the box price, is often the surest way to get a new set. Pokémon Center also sells some items by emailed invitation now; see how Pokémon Center invites work.

04

Get an alert when you can act

For Pokémon, our free email alerts come only when a queue, drawing, invitation or pre-order is open right now at a store that sells it officially, with the store's own link first (how they work). Pick Pokémon when you sign up below.

Pokémon Center drops often open with a waiting room. When one does, keep one window open and don't refresh. Our Windows page shows each store's line as it opens.

Keep going
